DROOLING over The Row's mesh flats but can't give in to the $700 price tag? A strikingly similar pair on Zara sells for less than $60; on Amazon there’s one for less than $50. In today's world with the rising cost of clothes, fear of recession and economic uncertainty across the globe, dupes of current trends from mega-chain brands, such as Zara, Mango and H&M, are a tempting buy. My colleague, Meredith Gallo, a millennial, and I, a baby boomer, chose half a dozen spring/summer 2025 trends, including charm necklaces, thong sandals and pricey sneakers, and investigated where we could buy them—for less.
Flip-Flops
JBK: There's nothing as cooling as an all-white outfit in summer; you just need a pop of color, such as these red sandals from H&M's "Premium Selection," which will set you back less than $40.
MG: What I like about these thong sandals is they're a summer classic. Whether you need something that goes with everything for a beach vacation or just to run errands at home you can't go wrong with a simple thong sandal. It's even better when it's only $16.
Necklaces With Charm
JBK: Pearls can be prissy-looking. Take the stodge out of them by adding charms in different styles and sizes. This one (above left) is just under $40 from Zara.
MG: I like that this chunky cord charm necklace (above right) combines a couple of my favorite accessory trends right now. It feels fun and whimsical without being too silly. I could see it looking great paired with a white or striped button-down.
Expensive Sneaker Dupes
MG: These animal print sneakers from Zara remind me so much of the TB.490 Rife Soft Camel Leather Sneakers from Alohas. I personally find the Alohas sneakers a little stiff so I'm holding out hope these near-dupes will be a more comfortable wear.
JBK: Great find, Meredith. I love Alohas but they’re spendy.
JBK: Onitsuko Tiger "Mexico" sneakers can add $200-plus to your credit card bill. As much as I like their sleek silhouette, I prefer the price ($38) on these from H&M, which do a fine imitation.
MG: I'm having a hard time expressing how much space velvety Mary Jane flats have taken up in my brain in the past year. It all started when I saw a very chic woman pair them with baggy jean shorts and an oversized white button-down. At this point, I really should have saved my time and shelled out for these or these. Alas I am forever a cheapskate and a baby when it comes to breaking in shoes. This pair from Mango looks comfortable, and the Mary Janes are available at a price point I can get behind.
Halter Necks
MG: Gap is my go-to place for staples like this no-fuss halter crop top (above left). I could imagine getting a lot of use out of this top this summer.
JBK: The halter crop top from the Gap is adorable, Meredith, but no body-hugging, midriff-baring tops for me, please. I'll try this more forgiving flowy one (above right) that flatters your shoulders.
Embroidered Tops
Semi-Transparent Lyocell Shirt
MG: This top caught my eye because it struck me as a great transition piece. It would look great through summer and into fall.
JBK: Agree, Meredith! I think the same about this Zara linen-blend top with its elbow-length puff sleeves and contrasting embroidery. I'd pair with the matching pants for going out to dinner and such.
